Return to Serie A
Sebastian Giovinco (35) has found a new club after six months without a club. According to media reports, the striker, who was last active for Al-Hilal Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, is drawn to his home country of Sampdoria Genoa. A medical check is expected there on Tuesday and a contract should be signed until the end of the season.
The Blucerchiati are reacting to the absence of Manolo Gabbiadiani (30), who is suffering from a cruciate ligament tear and will not be available to the club for several months. Since captain Fabio Quagliarella (39; leg injury) is also out, coach Marco Giampaolo can only fall back on Francesco Caputo (34) and Vladyslav Supryaga (21) in the center of the attack. Giovinco, who knows Serie A very well from positions at Juventus, Empoli and Parma and has collected 78 points in 190 games, should remedy the situation.
The former national player was last active in the Italian upper house in 2015 before moving to Major League Soccer with Toronto FC. Giovinco made 142 appearances for the Canadians in four years – more than for any other club. With 83 goals, the offensive power became the top scorer in club history and was instrumental in winning the first championship in 2017.
In January 2019, Giovinco left the Canadian club for Riyadh, where he played for two and a half years. Most recently, he returned to Toronto to prepare for the season that starts in a few weeks. In addition to the Reds, other MLS clubs were reportedly interested in signing before Sampdoria intervened.
