Giorgia Meloni’s victory and the future of our feminism

D.once we are, a woman Prime Minister in Italy is possible and her name is Giorgia Melonito which the polls have delivered a success that at this point gives her the chair of the premier with certainty.

Above all, among those who did not vote for it, there is a doubt as to whether this conquest could in itself bring an advantage to women’s causes. A clear closing attitude prevails among those who have opposed the deployment of Meloni: “How can a leader who during the election campaign questioned the right to abortion not make us retreat in terms of all other rights?“.

On the stage of the Tempo delle Donne, where in September we talked about leadership and new strategies of feminism, I was struck, in this regard, by the reasoning of Antonio Polito, columnist of the Corriere della Sera: “For me that Meloni is prime minister is in itself a value, he said -. Because there have never been women Prime Minister. So if his ideas brought her there, it’s still a step forward“.

In short, if Meloni will travel that last mile, he will do it for all women, even for those he does not represent and even if tomorrow, as premier, he will make rearguard choices on abortion or rights.

From now on, the role of the Prime Minister will be truly contestable for a woman because it will have been proven that a female candidacy in our country does not suffer from gender bias.

On the same Milanese stage of the Triennale, the actor and LGBT + activist Pietro Turano launched an interesting provocation: «Let us ask ourselves why – she asked – a woman who reaches a position of power is almost always guaranteeing the preservation of the patriarchy“.

Therefore, according to him, Giorgia Meloni would have made it because the voters would not have experienced it as a threat to the status quo, so her being a woman has become irrelevant.

This would explain why women on the left are not gaining positions: why they are running to break the mold. Even in their own parties. Meloni, on the other hand, founded the party, leading it right from the start, without competing for it with anyone.
