Gino Mäder fell to his death – The doctor who came to help tells what awaited him

The doctor who was among the first to come to Gino Mäder’s aid tells about the course of the tragic situation.

Last week, at the end of the sixth stage of the Tour of Switzerland, a cyclist fell off a mountainside Gino Mäderi could not be saved, believes the doctor who was there.

Mäder agreed to leave the road at a point where the competitors travel at a speed of almost one hundred kilometers per hour. A Swiss cyclist rolled down the slope and ended up in a stream.

The doctor of the competition Roland Kretsch arrived among the first to help Mäder. The situation was immediately critical, as Mäder showed no signs of life.

– There was no movement, no pulse and he didn’t move. We got him up with the physical therapist and started CPR. Gradually we got more help from the rescue personnel, the doctor tells the Swiss Blick.

CPR lasted 25 minutes. Mäderi’s heart was made to beat again.

– We brought him back to life for a while.

Mäder was transported to the hospital by rescue helicopter. However, the man never regained consciousness. The next morning, he was pronounced dead.

There is no exact information about Mäder’s fall.

– Maybe the speed was too much, the brakes didn’t work or he slipped, Kretsch speculates.

The competitor’s death shocked the entire cycling world. The races around Switzerland were completed after the race organizers had first discussed the matter with Mäder’s relatives. Many competitors dropped out after the accident.

At the same point, the road also derailed Magnus Sheffieldwhich survived the accident with less damage.
