Singer Gil Ofarim claimed to have been insulted in an anti-Semitic manner in a Leipzig hotel. This was always denied by those responsible on site.

The public prosecutor’s office in Leipzig has now brought charges against the musician for false suspicion.

According to the investigators, Ofarim’s accusation could not be substantiated, which is why the case against the employee was discontinued.

What role did the necklace with the Star of David play?

Ofarim had openly accused the hotel of anti-Semitism. When he visited the “Westin” hotel in October 2021, he is said to have been refused check-in because he was wearing a chain with the Star of David around his neck. The allegation quickly made the rounds, media from all over the world reported.

However, witness statements and camera images quickly painted a different picture of the situation. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the police could not find any witnesses who perceived an anti-Semitic insult that evening. It is also disputed whether Ofarim was wearing the necklace with the Star of David at all at the time.

According to hotel employees, the singer felt disadvantaged compared to other customers who were served faster and spoke of a video on Instagram that “would go viral”. After initial clarifications, Ofarim had refused further statements about what was happening.
