Gijs Rademaker has made his debut as an RTL face with a five-minute lament about his departure from AvroTros. “They took me off the air for two months!”
The EenVandaag program has turned Gijs Rademaker into a well-known TV personality, but in Hilversum there are an incredible number of never-enough caterpillars who suddenly want ‘more’. The pollster asked the NPO if he could make a program about dinosaurs, but that was not allowed. And sit on the talk shows? Also not.
Two months at home
Gijs has now switched to RTL, because there he is – in addition to opinion polls – allowed to sit in talk shows and make programs about dinosaurs. Very nice for him, but EenVandaag also wants to continue and guard its own identity. When he announced his departure, it was therefore decided to immediately replace him as the face of the opinion panel.
It is for this reason that we have not seen Gijs on television in October and November – his contract with AvroTros ran until December. Not much going on, you would think: after all, Gijs was allowed to sit at home, where he had all the time to worry about all his children (three) and watch Jurassic World. But nothing is less true.
Lamentation at Ren ze
Gijs’ debut at RTL yesterday consisted of a minute-long lament about his departure from AvroTros. He was given plenty of room for it in Renze Klamer’s talk show. “I worked at EenVandaag until 1 December. So they explicitly asked me not to be in the picture for the past two months.”
Renze stokes the fire: “You say: ‘That’s how it goes’, but did that surprise you?”
Then Gijs sighs: “In all honesty, it surprised me. See, the speed of that surprised me. The last broadcast was a bit faster than I thought.”
‘I suddenly stopped’
Renze pretends that Gijs has suffered terrible personal suffering. Seriously: “You are polls, so what did you even do in those two months? That must have been terrible, right?”
Gijs goes along with it completely, as if anyone in the country is interested that he was not allowed to play an opinion poll for two months. “I suddenly stopped, so from my side it was quite a swallow. I missed it terribly. You are used to going 200 kilometers per hour and suddenly you come to a standstill.”
Abrupt divorce
So Gijs himself is leaving the program to which he owes his entire career and now he is going to complain on television about the way their self-chosen divorce went? Yes. “You have left the program where you worked for eighteen years. It is also a kind of friendship, a family. That divorce came a bit more abruptly than I expected.”
Was poor Gijs able to give it all a place? “Such transfers are difficult and sensitive. It was a very hard divorce for a while, but it’s also done now. In the past two months I have of course had time to think about what I am going to do at RTL.”
Good thing, too. And through.
