Ryan Giggs has resigned as Wales national team coach on Monday. The former Manchester United player keeps the credit to himself. He had been out of action for a long time after being accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her sister.
In the absence of Giggs, who himself denies all charges, Wales managed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time, later this year in Qatar. The team recently played in the Nations League against the Netherlands.
“It was an honor to be the Wales national team coach,” Giggs said in a statement. “But given the circumstances, I have to leave now. The current coach, the players, everyone has deserved to prepare as best as possible for the World Cup. That will be difficult for me.”
Kate Greville, Giggs’ ex-girlfriend, filed a complaint last year for allegedly evicting her from a hotel room when she accused the former football player of flirting with other women. He is also alleged to have headbutted her and also attacked her younger sister.
The Welshman played 61 caps for Wales between 1991 and 2007 and during that period also made a furore as a left midfielder for Manchester United, with which he won the national championship 13 times and won the Champions League twice.
Giggs’ duties have been taken over by Robert Page since his departure from Wales.
