Berlin cleaned up on Saturday. A comment from BZ editor Stefan Peter.

Berlin, you can be so dirty! There is hardly a neighborhood in the capital where the streets, squares and parks are not littered. Empty packaging, rusted bicycles or even sofas – everything is simply thrown away thoughtlessly.

That’s why actions like “World Cleanup Day” are more than gratifying – volunteers are making our city a little bit cleaner bit by bit.

The Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey was there. Not only was she the patron of the campaign, she also got her hands dirty. The town hall boss as a good role model! It proves that Berlin’s politicians are aware of the garbage problem.

Now the Senate, regulatory offices and the BSR have to do more together.

Because one thing is clear: the littering of the city cannot be mastered with an action day and well-intentioned appeals alone!
