After the bad start of the coalition with the CDU, the Berlin SPD leadership wants to respond to the needs of the divided party in the coming weeks.

At the state party conference on May 26, the result of the repeat election in February had to be evaluated and “the content of the party’s orientation had to be discussed,” said Berlin SPD chairwoman Franziska Giffey on Friday.

Giffey is now Senator for Commerce after serving as Governing Mayor. You also have to make sure “that the party gets back together” and “that we get together again,” emphasized Giffey, with a view to the narrow member decision on the coalition with the CDU.

The Berlin MP and SPD district chairman Lars Rauchfuss had previously said that the SPD now had to work through two election slippers. In addition, the resistance to the coalition with the CDU is even greater than expected. “It’s time to take political responsibility.”

The new Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) was only elected on Thursday for the third time, although the CDU and SPD together have a clear absolute majority in the House of Representatives.
