Giffey expects up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees in Berlin

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey expects that up to 100,000 war refugees from Ukraine will be temporarily accommodated in Berlin.

“We assume (…) that we will probably have 50,000 to 100,000 people here in Berlin,” said the SPD politician on Friday after a visit to the State Office for Immigration (Lea).

“That’s at least a third of the district. That is a very big challenge.”

In the Lea, Ukrainian refugees who initially came to Berlin without registering and who can provide proof of accommodation can now apply for a residence permit that gives them a two-year right of residence and, for example, allows them to take up a job immediately.

You can fill out the applications online and book an appointment at the Lea at the same time. According to Giffey, 11,000 online applications have been received so far.
