Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) can gain something from the idea of compulsory social service for young people.

“I think Federal President Steinmeier’s proposal is worth considering, especially in times of crisis,” she quotes the “Tagesspiegel” (Monday, online). “I’ve always supported the principle of voluntariness, but we live in changed times and perhaps the turning point is that every young person spends a year of their life serving the community,” said Giffey.

“Such a year not only serves the common good, but is also a formative experience for every young person, which provides orientation, broadens horizons, enriches lifelong and can even set the course for their later professional path,” said the SPD politician .

Frank-Walter Steinmeier initiated the debate at the weekend. “It’s about the question of whether it wouldn’t be good for our country if women and men put themselves in the service of society for a certain period of time,” the Federal President told BILD on Sunday.
