GGzE about suspending psychiatry training: ‘Do not put clients at risk’

According to GGzE in Eindhoven, the care for clients with psychological problems is not at stake. That is what the mental health institution says in a response, after it became known that the training to become a psychiatrist at GGzE has been suspended.

The Registration Committee for Medical Specialists decided to suspend the training after investigating complaints from current and former students. According to the registration committee, this shows that there is an ‘unsafe learning climate. The training to become a psychiatrist has been placed under intensive supervision. Also, new psychiatry students may temporarily not be admitted to the program.

“The GGzE is aware of signals of an unsafe training climate in our training as a psychiatrist,” she writes in a response. “We consider a safe working and training climate to be essential. We take these signals very seriously and we immediately got to work.” It is not yet clear what the (former) students are complaining about.

Head trainer resigned
In order to improve the situation, GGzE is engaged in ‘enthusiastic and constructive’ discussions with everyone involved in the training. For example, an external confidential adviser was asked to conduct an investigation. In anticipation of this, the head trainer has temporarily stepped down. It concerns Machteld Marcelis, who is also a professor at Maastricht University. Someone else takes over her duties as head trainer.

GGzE has lodged an appeal against the decision of the registration committee to suspend the training to become a psychiatrist. The institution is confident that it can improve the training climate and that the suspension will be lifted as a result. The registration committee is now conducting more research and will soon decide whether the measures are still necessary. A final decision will probably follow next month, GGzE writes.

Suspension is a huge problem
If the suspension is not reversed, the GGzE will have a huge problem. This would mean that the 25 psychiatry students would have to leave on January 1, 2023.

The workload for psychiatrists then becomes too great and clients will have to wait longer for care. GGzE also suffers financial damage if the training remains suspended, several health economists tell Omroep Brabant about the situation. According to them, the mental attitude is committed to improving the situation as quickly as possible.
