Get more out of Google Calendar with these handy tricks | Tech

Google Calendar is a suitable companion to have your appointments ready anytime and anywhere. You can get even more out of Google Calendar with these handy tricks.

The tips you will find below can be used or set up via the web version of Google Calendar, which you can reach at calendar.google.com.

Import Facebook events

You can add an event directly from Facebook to your Google Calendar. Go to the event page on Facebook and click on the three horizontal dots. Choose ‘Add to calendar’. Then press ‘Export’. A file will now be downloaded.

In your Google Calendar, press the plus sign next to ‘Other calendars’. Press ‘Import’ and select the file you just downloaded. Choose the calendar you want to add it to and press ‘Import’ to add the Facebook event. The event will appear in your calendar with a link to the Facebook page.

Receive appointment email

It is possible to receive a daily e-mail containing all your appointments for that day. Open ‘Settings’ via the gear icon and select a calendar of your choice under ‘Settings for my calendars’. Go to ‘Other notifications’ below and turn on the ‘Email’ option under ‘Daily calendar’.

Shortcut keys

If you want to work faster, use keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse. For example, by pressing the ‘C’ on your keyboard you can quickly create a new appointment, and with the E key you can change an appointment.

If you have accidentally deleted an appointment, for example with the shortcut ‘Backspace’ or ‘Delete’, you can undo this with ‘Z’. Use the Y or N key to navigate to the next calendar month. To go back to the present day, use the T-key.

Family calendar

It is possible to exchange diaries with each other so that everyone in the family is aware of certain activities without inviting each other every time. At ‘My calendars’ hold the mouse over the agenda you want to share and press the three vertical dots. Here, choose ‘Settings and sharing’ and press ‘Add people’ under ‘Share with specific people’.

Do you no longer want to share a calendar? Then you simply press the cross next to the person with whom you share the agenda.

Desktop Notifications

By default, Google Calendar uses an annoying popup to remind you that a certain event is coming up. When you’re doing something, like typing, you’ll be taken to Google Calendar.

If you want to be notified of important events in your calendar while you can continue with what you were doing, turn on desktop notifications. You do this by going to the settings and turning on the option ‘desktop notifications’ under the heading ‘Notifications settings’.

Multi-day activity

Going on vacation or want to add another activity that takes several days? Then, in Google Calendar on the web, hold down your mouse on the first day of the event and drag it to its last day. You can then enter the details of the activity, such as the name and any description.
