Germany’s game for third place is also about the Olympics

Germany missed the final at the home European Championship. But the game for third place on Sunday is not just about a medal.

Now there’s the game for third place. On Sunday, national coach Alfred Gíslason’s team will face Sweden in Cologne (from 3 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). But the game is also about qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris. Because one ticket is awarded to the European champion.

Because with France as host country and Denmark as world champions, both finalists are automatically there, the ticket now goes to the winner of the game for third place. Both current European champions Sweden and Germany have the chance to qualify early.

DHB star Rune Dahmke said after the defeat in the semi-finals: “If we manage to do that, it will be a huge success.” National coach Gíslason also knows the importance of the duel against Sweden: “Now we have a final for an Olympic place,” he says on ZDF.

Who has also already been determined

Whoever loses the duel will have another chance in March. Then there will be three qualifying tournaments, each of which will distribute two tickets for the games in Paris.

In addition to France and Denmark, Asian champions Japan and South American champions Argentina are already safely qualified. The African champion is still being determined. The tournament runs parallel to the European Championships. Algeria and Egypt are in the final. Host Egypt is considered the favorite.

For women, France, Denmark, Brazil, Angola, Norway and South Korea have already qualified for the handball tournament in Paris.
