Germany’s basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki appeals to Schröder and Co.: Be part of the national team at the European Championships – Newsticker

Dennis Schröder wants to play for DBB selection

Dennis Schröder has announced his willingness to play for Germany again this summer. The point guard was absent last summer because no insurance could be taken out for him due to his unresolved contract situation. Schröder, currently with the Houston Rockets, is also going into this summer with an expiring contract.

The future of the 28-year-old, like all other candidates from the North American league, should be clear by the time the European Championship begins. “The contract should be in place for the European Championship, and hopefully most of them will then decide to play for Germany. So that we can send the best players to the start,” says Nowitzki.

The German Basketball Federation will need the best possible team, because the preliminary round group with France, Slovenia, Lithuania, Hungary and Bosnia-Herzegovina is tough. “It will be a difficult group, but I think we have a lot of potential. Anything is possible in Berlin. There are no big favourites,” says Nowitzki.

In 2015 at the European Championships with the preliminary round in Berlin, it was not enough for Germany to progress despite Nowitzki and Schröder. Nowitzki still has great memories of the tournament. After the last group game, the spectators in Berlin gave him an ovation from the German national team. “I will never forget that, it still gives me chills today.”
