Start of the Handball World Cup

DHB team wins with difficulty – worries about Knorr

January 15, 2025 – 10:01 p.mReading time: 2 minutes

The DHB selection started the World Cup with an arduous victory. Poland turned out to be a very unpleasant opponent and demanded everything from Knorr & Co. for a long time.

The German national handball team started the world championships in Denmark, Norway and Croatia with a victory. In Herning, Denmark, national coach Alfred Gislason’s team beat the Polish team 35:28 (15:14).

Especially in the first half, the cheeky Poles made life difficult for the German team. Germany only took the lead three times – 1:0, 8:7 and 15:14, which also meant the score at halftime.

DHB team manager Benjamin Chatton stated in an ARD interview at the break: “We had big problems getting into the game. It’s important for the head that we go into the dressing room with a one-goal lead.”

The start to the second round was much better. After two and a half minutes of play, they took a two-goal lead for the first time ever in the match (17:15). 30 seconds later it was even three goals ahead. But this was gone again after a few minutes – the Poles could not be shaken off.

Shocking moment after around 40 minutes: Germany’s playmaker Juri Knorr injured his left knee without being affected by the opponent, had to leave the field and limped back and forth behind the German bench. He no longer intervened in the game afterwards.

Despite Knorr’s failure, the DHB selection managed to keep their opponents at bay. Which was also thanks to the once again strong Andreas Wolff. The Kiel goalkeeper saved a total of three seven meters.

The best thrower on the DHB team was Renars Uscins with ten hits. Co-favorites Germany will continue on Friday. Then they face Switzerland in the second preliminary round game (8.30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker).
