The painting ‘Landscape of Italian Character’ disappeared from a museum after being stolen by an American soldier

The Alte Pinakothek art museum in Munich, Germany will recover a painting stolen in Germany during World War II which has reappeared in USA.

It is ‘Landscape of Italian Character’, by the Austrian painter Johann Franz Nepomuk Lauterer (1700-1733), which has been delivered in a ceremony at the Consulate General of Germany in Chicago, according to an announcement from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The painting, which disappeared from the museum’s collections during the Second World Warreappeared a few years ago near Chicago, among the belongings of the descendants of an American soldier.

It is hoped that this work of art can be exhibited soon. as part of the art gallery of the Alte Pinakothek museum, in the German city of Munich, along with its counterpart, Lauter’s painting ‘Italian Landscape’.
