The Federal Prosecutor General has initiated an investigation against still unknown members of the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas.
The investigations are related to the possible kidnapping and killing of German citizens in Israel, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday in Karlsruhe. It is about suspicion of membership in a foreign terrorist organization.
Hamas fired thousands of rockets into Israel on Saturday, and at the same time hundreds of fighters invaded the south of the country, killing civilians and soldiers. The death toll has now risen to more than 900 on the Israeli side and more than 680 on the Palestinian side in the Gaza Strip, which Israel attacked from the air in retaliation. Thousands more people were injured on both sides.
In addition, according to the Israeli government, around 150 people were kidnapped by Hamas fighters into the Gaza Strip.
According to information from the Foreign Office, those kidnapped apparently also include people with dual Israeli and German citizenship. According to media reports on Tuesday, a German tourist was among those killed. BILD first reported on the Karlsruhe investigation.
