Germans know how to find Haarlem again: “Wunderschöne Stadt”

After two corona years, tourism is blooming again in Haarlem. Germans in particular know how to find the city again, they notice at the tourist office. Tourists from Asia will stay away this year and visits from, for example, America and Australia are still slowly getting started.

The foreign tourists find Haarlem particularly attractive as a holiday destination because it is a compact city, where many historical aspects have been preserved. At the tourist office they often hear from tourists how beautiful the city is.

‘Beautiful city of Haarlem’

A quick lap along the socials confirms that image. Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are full of sunny shots of the Grote Markt, various canals and windmill De Adriaan. “The beautiful city of Haarlem”, Keith writes with a photo of the Grote of Sint Bavokerk.

According to the French Marie, Haarlem is ‘magnifique’, and the German Manuela calls it a ‘wunderschöne stadt’. A Swedish influencer describes Haarlem as ‘a very nice city with great shops, great culture and cozy restaurants and cafes’.

Courtyards, churches and museums

Popular places of interest for tourists are the Haarlem courtyards, but also the churches and major museums. Germans choose Haarlem to enjoy culture during their holiday, in combination with the beach in Zandvoort.

The German regional medium’express‘ published a travel article about Haarlem earlier this week. It mentions that a trip to the city is especially ideal for couples. “It’s romantic strolling along the canals and through the old, winding streets,” says the writer.

Parking is expensive

In addition to the museums and the beach of Zandvoort, a cruise through the canals and the bustling catering establishments on and around the Grote Markt will be put in the spotlight. Haarlem is also seen as a good starting and returning point for trips in the area.

The only downside mentioned in the article is the parking costs. “It can get expensive,” the writer warns. Perhaps a good argument to get acquainted with another piece of heritage: the bicycle.
