Germany’s World Cup group opponents Ivory Coast have to settle for a draw against Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations. The round of 16 is not yet certain.
Germany’s World Cup opponents Ivory Coast missed their second win in the second group game of the Africa Cup. The defending champions had to settle for a 1-1 (0-0) draw in the top duel in Group F against Cameroon. Both teams lead the Group F table with four points each. Both are not yet sure of their place in the round of 16.
Meet Konan and Tchamadeu
Amad Konan (51′) gave the Ivorians the lead in an entertaining game, but just five minutes later Cameroon countered in Marrakech through Junior Tchamadeu (56′). For the Ivorians, shooting star Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig was once again in the starting line-up, while Leverkusen’s Christian Kofane started on the Cameroon side, whose shot was directed onto the crossbar by Yahia Fofana in the 22nd minute.
The last group opponent on Wednesday is Gabon with the former Bundesliga top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Gabon is still without a point after a defeat against outsiders Mozambique.
Ivory Coast is one of the favorites
Last year, Ivory Coast won their third continental title at their home tournament – despite a change of coach during the finals. Coach Emerse Faé’s team is also one of the favorites to win at this year’s edition in Morocco.
The German national soccer team also has to play in the second game of the 2026 World Cup against the three-time African champions Ivory Coast. The “elephants” were “among the best this continent has to offer,” DFB sports director Rudi Völler recently said.
