German watchtower in Poperinge becomes a tourist attraction

The tower is now protected as a monument. At the top, ten meters above ground level, you have a beautiful view of the region. It stands in the middle of farmer Gilbert Laseure’s field. He preferred to see the building demolished at the time, but the construction still appears to be sturdy today.

City buys tower

Nothing further happened to the protected tower, but the city of Poperinge is now changing that. The city of Poperinge wants to turn it into a tourist attraction. “The necessary sites have been purchased, as well as the tower to be opened up to the public in the future,” says Mayor Christof Dejaegher. “We also want to tell the story there with a number of panels and make it a resting point. We have submitted the file to the province of West Flanders.” (read more below the photo)

celebrate liberation

The Horizon 2025 project is underway in West Flanders, which combines an entire network of observation towers and experience platforms. The tower should open by 2024: it will then be 80 years ago that Poperinge was liberated.
