After a big fight, the German U20 national team missed the surprising entry into the semi-finals at the Ice Hockey World Championships in Canada.
The team of national coach Tobias Abstreiter lost 2:5 (1:3, 1:0, 0:2) against Finland in Edmonton on Wednesday, but can look back on the tournament performance with satisfaction: For the first time a German U20 made it for the second time in a row to a World Cup quarterfinals.
Bennet Roßmy (13’/38′) kept the team in the game for a long time with two goals, and Finland only pulled away decisively in the third period. Germany played well and even scored more goals than their opponents well into the final section. Especially when outnumbered, Abkampfer’s team had problems with the fast game of the Finns.
The favorite scored four of the five goals in the power play, and Roßmy was also successful in each case with a German majority. The 19-year-old from Eisbären Berlin scored in the third World Cup game in a row. The team of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) finished their group in third place, in the four games they achieved two victories against Austria and Switzerland.
