German toboggan double victory in Oberhof

Double victory at home: Five-time toboggan world champion Julia Taubitz celebrated her fourth success of the season on the second World Cup weekend in Oberhof and thus extended her lead in the overall standings.

The 27-year-old from Oberwiesenthal prevailed on the Rennsteig with a lead of 51 thousandths over Olympic silver medalist Anna Berreiter.

“In the first run I had a few mistakes at the start, but otherwise the two runs were nice,” said Taubitz on “ZDF”: “I’m really enjoying tobogganing here now. It was a really great victory for me.” Taubitz had won in Whistler and Altenberg this season and was also ahead in the Lake Placid sprint.

The German duo were in second and third place after the first round, but caught Austria’s Madeleine Egle, who was leading at halftime. Egle finished third, 0.116 seconds behind.

Merle Fräbel (Suhl), who celebrated her first World Cup victory at the first Oberhof race weekend the previous week, only came in sixth this time after a weak first run. Melina Fischer (Zwickau) came tenth.
