German tennis ace ends career

After 17 years and 174 matches on the tour, it’s over: tennis professional Peter Gojowczyk has ended his career – at the place of his greatest success in Metz, where he celebrated his only ATP title in 2017. The 34-year-old from Munich announced this on Instagram.

“Even as a child, seeing tennis legends like Boris Becker on the court ignited a burning passion in me,” wrote Gojowczyk, who was defeated by the Frenchman Harold Mayot in qualifying in Metz on Saturday: “Today I can proudly say, that I lived my dream of becoming a professional tennis player.”

In addition to the title in Metz, the right-hander celebrated reaching the semi-finals of the Davis Cup with the German team in 2021 – in 2021 he was in the round of 16 of the US Open. Gojowczyk reached his best world ranking position, 39th, in the summer of 2018.

“I played against some of the best players in the world, which was an incredible experience and honor,” wrote Gojowczyk, who has earned almost $4 million in prize money during his career, mentioning Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer by name. “The tennis world will remain a part of my life, but now a new, wonderful chapter begins.”
