Alexandra Popp found it hard to believe on Wednesday that Germany had qualified for the final of the European Women’s Football Championship. “To be honest, I can hardly put it into words. We played a great game again,” said the German striker, who scored twice in the semi-final against France (2-1).
“We are so incredibly happy,” Popp continued. “We will face England in front of 90,000 people at Wembley on Sunday. I can’t think of anything more beautiful. This is great.”
National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said she is proud of her team. “It is deserved, we have worked so hard for it. We have grown together during this tournament and have become a close team. We will do anything for each other,” she said.
Germany can win the European Championship for the ninth time in history. For England, with the Dutch national coach Sarina Wiegman, it would be the first time.
