German runner Benfares tested positive for doping

The German middle and long-distance runner Sara Benfares has tested positive for doping. Her club confirmed this.

Shock for German athletics: Sara Benfares has tested positive for doping. Her club LC Rehlingen (near Saarbrücken) confirmed this to the “Saarländischer Rundfunk”. In addition, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) confirmed to the “Saarbrücker Zeitung” that an A sample from the athlete tested positive for Epo and testosterone.

It is currently not known when the doping sample is from and when it was taken. Suspension proceedings were initiated against the 22-year-old in accordance with the regulations of the German Athletics Association (DLV).

Benfares was informed of the suspected violation

The “Saarbrücker Zeitung” also writes that Benfares was informed about the alleged violation and now has the opportunity to comment on it. Benfares’ lawyer Rainer Cherkeh declined to comment.

Apparently there was a hearing at NADA in Bonn on Monday. Benfares is a member of Team Saarland for the Paris Olympics this summer. It is financially supported by the Saar Sports Foundation.

Track and field athlete excluded from Team Saarland for the time being

As the “Saarländischer Rundfunk” reports, the runner has been excluded from the Saarland team for the time being and will not receive any financial support for this time. This applies until the case is clarified, explained Johannes Kopkow from the state sports association.

In 2021, the middle and long-distance runner became U23 champion in the 1,500 meters. A year later she won the ten kilometer road race title. Benfares had to sit out almost entirely last year because she suffered a stress fracture in her thigh.
