And suddenly the water was gone: The German U23 rowers experienced a strange surprise at the end of their training camp in Mequinenza, Spain.
The water level of the dammed Ebro sank quickly until the boats were left dry and could no longer be used.
“It was explained to us that the river dam was lowered to make room for the water, which was to be drained in large quantities from the mountains,” said U23 national coach Marcus Schwarzrock on the German Rowing Association’s homepage.
The German U23 rowers have been coming to Mequinenza regularly since 2013. On the last four days, the team had to move to the 20 ergometers they had brought with them. “In general, our offspring have physiological deficits, so we were able to work on that even more,” says Schwarzrock with a wink.
