The Masters tournament in Indian Wells becomes a debacle for the German participants. The last hope: Australian Open finalist Alexander Zverev.

The German tennis professionals caught a difficult start at the Masters tournament in Indian Wells. With the exception of Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, everyone already failed in the first round.

Jan-Lennard Struff lost to the Frenchman Gaël Monfils 4: 6, 4: 6. The tournament was quickly over for Tatjana Maria: she clearly lost 1: 6, 1: 6 against the Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. The day before, Jule Niemeier had already left.

Alexander Zverev, who is number one, did not have to compete in the first round and only gets in at the hard court tournament in California in the second round. There he dueled with the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor. Most recently, the Hamburger had reached the final at the Australian Open at a hard court tournament, but then had no success in South America in three competitions on sand.

In Indian Wells, Zverev said: “Maybe that wasn’t the right decision, especially after the final in the Australian Open I might have stayed on hard court for a little longer.” Nevertheless, he defended his choice to switch to sand early in the season, with a view to the French Open. “I just wanted to play on sand and find my game there as soon as possible.” In the first few weeks on this surface, he had often had problems in the past. That is why he wanted to find his rhythm early to go to Paris in the best possible way.
