German police end hostage-taking in Berlin store | Abroad

A special unit of the German police ended a hostage taking in Berlin on the night from Monday to Tuesday. A hostage has been freed, this person is unharmed. A hostage-taker committed suicide, police said.

It is not entirely clear what exactly happened. The hostage-taking began around 6 p.m. on Monday evening with a robbery of a shop in the Schöneberg district, police said. According to the German newspaper Bild, it was a robbery of an antique shop on Keithstrasse, in which a woman was seriously injured.

The German newspaper writes that two perpetrators were involved. One of them is said to have surrendered around 8 p.m., after which negotiations between the police and the other perpetrator continued well into the night. Shortly after 2:30 a.m., police reported that the hostage-taking had ended.

The German police said several times that they could not share information in order not to “obstruct” the operation. Passers-by, local residents and the media were also asked not to take and share photos, as this could endanger those involved. On images that the Berlin Zeitung shares, you can see that there was a huge police force on the move.
