German national team | Voss-Tecklenburg postpones final squad decision

Contrary to plans, national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg will not announce her final squad for the European Football Championship on Saturday.

“It’s quite possible that we won’t just start next week with 23 players, but maybe also with 24, 25, 26,” said the 54-year-old at the training camp. The reason for this are battered players like Sjoeke Nüsken from Frankfurt and Tabea Waßmuth from Wolfsburg; there is also the case of Alexandra Popp.

“We still have two or three small question marks. It’s important that we don’t go to the European Championship with too many question marks,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. Captain Popp is currently unable to train: the Wolfsburg resident is in isolation after a positive corona test.

With 113 international matches, the 31-year-old is the most experienced in the team. After a protracted knee injury, Popp made her comeback in the DFB team in April.

Actually, five players should be deleted from the 29er squad by Saturday. The DFB selection is now probably with more than 23 professionals in the last preparation on Tuesday in Herzogenaurach and in the international match on July 24 in Erfurt against Switzerland.
