Amon-Ra St. Brown likes the Rhineland and currywust, and he likes big goals and American football. And how well that fits can be observed in the NFL in particular.
Amon-Ra St. Brown hopped, once, twice, three times, then pounded his chest. Behind him stood the fans of the Detroit Lions, they too jumped and clapped, many threw their arms in the air. And from the off, a reporter’s voice summarized what he saw: Touchdown by St. Brown, again.
Amon-Ra St. Brown posted the video himself, it was taken after the Lions went 40-14 against them Jacksonville Jaguars on the night of Monday (05.12.2022). He contributed two touchdowns in the win and caught 11 passes for a total of 114 yards.
St. Brown also captioned the video with a text message. It was short, just one sentence. “Take your finger off that snooze button”, he wrote. So keep your hands off the snooze button, you can do that.
Coach Campbell says: ‘St Brown is better than Gold’
Amon-Ra St. Brown, 23, is in his second season in the NFL, and what a wide receiver, St. Brown is one of the faces of this season. For St. Brown six touchdowns and 76 caught passes are recorded in eleven games. They’re impressive stats.
A few weeks ago, Lions coach Dan Campbell was scheduled to speak about St. Brown’s strengths, listing explosiveness, competitiveness and understanding of the game. Campbell said: “He’s better than gold.”
He’s now a hopeful for the Detroit Lions
Of course, sentences like this are never without risk. One can question their usefulness and also whether one should necessarily compare the value of a football player with that of gold. Coach Campbell’s statement can also be seen as proof of Amon-Ra St. Brown’s importance in the Detroit Lions game.
Because the Lions are not a team that has recently been associated with great success. Just one example: Of all the teams that were at the inception of the Super Bowl in 1967, only the Lions have never reached the finals.
And Amon-Ra St. Brown is now the Lions’ big hope. He’s a wide receiver with a flair for space – and a penchant for currywurst.
Currywurst, Egyptian mythology, dumbbell training
His father John used to be a successful bodybuilder, even Mr. Universe, and in the late 80s he was a guest at a large fitness fair in Cologne. There John also met Miriam, a woman from the Rhineland, they liked each other. Today they have three children: Amon-Ra of course, he is surely the most talented St. Brown. Equanimeous is under contract with the Chicago Bears in the NFL, and Osiris also played for a long time in college. They all have a German passport.
Amon-Ra St. Brown once told Deutsche Welle that as a child he often enjoyed going to his mother’s homeland. He talked about visits to Leverkusen-Hitdorf, where he played in the garden as a child. And he said he was actually always on time, that was very German. And then there was the matter of the food. “I love Bratwurst and Currywurst”said St. Brown.
But father John not only liked fitness and Miriam, he also liked big goals and unusual first names. Amon-Ra is based on a sun king from Egyptian mythology. Anyway, John trained his sons when they were kids. They lifted weights and were otherwise quite fit. Eventually they set goals together, they all had the same thing: the NFL.
They can be big goals. Big goals.
Amon-Ra St. Brown is now a rising star in the top league in the world. He will hardly have been surprised, he obviously has no lack of self-confidence. Once he said he wanted to someday “best player of all time” be.
It was obvious early on that football player Amon-Ra St. Brown had talent. He once scored four touchdowns in one quarter in a college game for the USC Trojans.
As a newcomer, write history right away
In spring 2021, St. Brown was the 112th pick by the NFL draft Detroit Lions selected. He had 16 wide receivers drafted ahead of him, and of course St. Brown was only happy with the contract, not his positioning. He said: “I know I’m better than any wide receiver that came before me.”
And yet, the draft was the first chapter in a story that has often been about successes and sometimes even records.
Club record in first season
In his debut season, St. Brown was the most successful freshman in Lions history. He caught 90 balls and rushed for 912 yards. And he caught at least eight passes in six straight games, beating the record held by Calvin Johnson, a Lions legend and inductee.
During this time, Amon-Ra St. Brown has sometimes been asked if he has any other goals. As if having the greatest player of all time wasn’t goal enough. The answer: he really wants to “a Super Bowl” to win. What else.
Of course, that’s still a long way off for St. Brown and his Detroit Lions, who are currently second in the NFC North division. But that’s how it’s always been in the life of Amon-Ra St. Brown. Great goals are welcome.
