Sabine Lisicki and Angelique Kerber are in the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open. If both make it to the semi-finals, there will be a direct duel.
Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki is still on course at the tennis tournament in Bad Homburg. On Wednesday, the 32-year-old defeated the Belgian Greetje Minnen 6: 3, 2: 6, 6: 2 and thus made it into the quarter-finals. Lisicki only won 6: 4, 7: 6 against compatriot Tamara Korpatsch on Tuesday and thus celebrated her first professional victory in a main field after the comeback.
“The match was basically really good today, I’m just really happy about that. I’m also happy to be able to continue playing,” said Lisicki. The tennis player told of a bee sting that “still really hurts”. She wanted to prevent an allergic reaction.
After a severe cruciate ligament injury and a one-and-a-half year injury break, Lisicki returned to the WTA tour in Berlin last week, but missed qualifying for the main draw. In Bad Homburg she got a wildcard. In the quarter-finals on Thursday, Lisicki will now face France’s Caroline Garcia.
Kerber still undefeated in Bad Homburg
In the afternoon, defending champion Angelique Kerber made it through to the last eight. The 34-year-old defending champion defeated the Italian Lucia Bronzetti 6:2, 6:3. In contrast to their first round match, which was characterized by interruptions in the rain and lasted two days, Kerber finished quickly this time. After 68 minutes it was over on the Hessian Center Court.
Kerber is still unbeaten in the second edition of the tournament, with seven wins and zero losses. On Thursday she will face France’s Alizé Cornet in the quarter-finals. Earlier in the day, she defeated Germany’s Tatjana Maria 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. In the round of the last four, there could be a direct duel between Kerber and Lisicki.
