German certification company PIP breast implants to reimburse 1,600 women in France | Abroad

The German certification company TÜV Rheinland, which was previously ordered to compensate thousands of women in the scandal involving the leaking breast implants of the French company Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP), has been ordered in France to compensate 1,600 new complainants. These are victims of 23 nationalities, for a total amount of at least 8 million euros, the Pipa victims’ association announced.

These claimants claimed 6,000 euros per person before the commercial court as compensation for the damage suffered. They received 5,000 euros, much more than the 3,000 euros that had been awarded to the first victims.

“TÜV is fully liable, without limitation, and must immediately compensate all victims, without exception,” said Olivier Aumaître, lawyer for Pipa.

TÜV Rheinland gave CE approval to PIP’s products. The French company filled implants with industrial silicone instead of medical silicone between 2001 and 2010. They often started to leak. About 400,000 women in 65 countries have been affected. Many women have had physical complaints and they are afraid that they have developed autoimmune or connective tissue diseases.

TÜV will probably appeal.
