The Potsdam Royals have secured the German Football League (GFL) title for the third time in a row. In a memorable final, last year’s winner turned things up late and won 33:23 against the Dresden Monarchs on Saturday.

Both teams had already faced each other in the German Bowl last year. The Royals are now the fourth team after the Berlin Adlers, the Braunschweig Lions and the Hamburg Blue Devils to make it to the “threepeat”.

After the favorite from Potsdam struggled for a long time, the approximately 18,000 fans in Dresden’s Rudolf Harbig Stadium saw decisive touchdowns in the last quarter, which gave the Royals the lead and thus turned the game around.

More than twice as many fans came to the Monarchs’ home stadium as in last year’s final for the new edition of the duel between the best German football teams. For Potsdam, the “Threepeat” also means the third title in the club’s history (in the GFL since 2018).

Last year, Potsdam won the championship against the Monarchs with a score of 27:21. The record winner of the GFL with twelve titles is the Lions team from Braunschweig, who last won the German Bowl in 2019.
