With a victory on points, Abass Baraou won the European super welterweight title. The Berlin boxer can hope for a world championship fight.
The Berlin professional boxer Abass Baraou has secured the European title in the super welterweight category. The 29-year-old won the continental title fight against local hero Sam Eggington (30) on points late on Friday evening in Telford, England.
The Wasserman Boxing professional can hope for a world championship fight soon. The world association WBA had decided before the duel that it would be held as a World Cup elimination fight.
Opponent had a cut on his eye
“It’s been a long road, I can’t believe I’ve made it this far,” said Baraou through tears in the DAZN interview: “I had to overcome many challenges.”
Baraou, who was already European champion and third in the World Championships among amateurs, dominated the fight against Eggington from halfway through the twelve rounds. The current number 7 in the WBA acted courageously, with good footwork and hard punches. His opponent suffered a clearly visible cut above his eye. For Baraou it was the 15th victory in the 16th professional fight and the greatest success of his career to date.
