German association wants to support young parents with Olympic ambitions

With kit and sails: The German Sailing Association (DSV) wants to give young parents with Olympic potential financial support.

“Competitive sport and family life must not be mutually exclusive,” said association president Mona Küppers: “With Paul Kohlhoff and Leonie Meyer, we have a father and a mother in the national team for the first time in a long time. These two outstanding athletes – and all the parents who are after come to them – we want to provide the best possible support.”

Therefore, the DSV board decided to create a special fund from bandages for young fathers and mothers with Olympic ambitions. This is intended to absorb additional costs for travel, accommodation and childcare in order to give children and parents as much time together as possible during training and competitions.

“It can’t be the case that mothers and fathers don’t see their children for weeks or months in preparation for the Olympics,” said Küppers. “Top performance is only possible when the conditions are right – and that also means that parents and children feel comfortable.”
