German air traffic disrupted by strikes at airports | Abroad

Air traffic in Germany is disrupted today by strikes by security guards at the airports of Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover and Bremen. As a result of these actions, many flights have been canceled and tens of thousands of travelers are affected.

Brussels Airport is also affected by the German strikes. Flights from Hamburg and Berlin to Brussels have been canceled today, according to the airport’s website. Travelers who want to fly from Brussels to Germany can also encounter problems.

The strikes were called by the Verdi trade union. The security guards would not be paid enough for the work, which often takes place at irregular hours. According to Verdi, the allowances for this irregularity have not been increased since 2006.

The actions started last night and early this morning. The airports of Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg have decided to cancel all departing flights for today. Many incoming flights are also likely to be affected. All flights would be canceled at Hanover.

Trade unions and airport companies in Germany have been at odds for some time over wages that are insufficient to compensate for the high inflation. On Friday there was another strike by baggage checkers at Munich airport. Earlier this year, there were also actions at German airports, including Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.
