A journalist had published high salary figures for the stars of FC Barcelona. Now Gerard Piqué counters and makes it clear how much he earns with the Catalans.
Football professional Gerard Piqué, defense chief of FC Barcelona, has made his salary public on a bank statement. 2,328,884.39 had been paid to him on December 30th, that was half of his annual income in 2021, tweeted the 34-year-old with receipt and defaced account number. A sports journalist known in Spain had previously speculated about a much higher salary for the world and European champions. “A little more respect,” demanded Piqué now.
The journalist Lluís Canut had mentioned much higher salaries for Piqué and the other Barça players Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Umtiti on the TV channel Esport3, but without naming a source for these sums. FC Barcelona also commented. “The amounts quoted are incorrect, do not correspond to reality and are also given as fixed amounts for the first three players named, which, since they are variable, can never be earned,” wrote the club on its website.
FC Barcelona is heavily indebted with 1.35 billion euros and, according to the rules of the league, must adhere to an upper limit for the salary of all players.
