Gerard had his own company, but is now employed again: ‘Relieved of all obligations’ | Work

SalaryHow much do you earn? We ask a Dutch person that every week. Today: Gerard (61) works 40 hours a week. He develops sound equipment and systems for, for example, stage and theatre. He makes a design and ensures that it is developed into a producible and market-compliant model.

What do you earn?
,,That is 3400 gross and that is 2700 euros net. For the overtime I get about 700 to 800 euros per month.”

Happy with?
“Yeah, I think it’s a good salary. Before this I had my own company for 26 years and I stopped. Also because of the corona story. Theater and theater were at a standstill and I thought: I’m old, I’m going to stop running my own business.”

What was it like to return to service?
,,It was nice, I was released from obligations. As an entrepreneur you earn more, but you also run more risk. So it was also a relief. As an entrepreneur I earned between 8,000 and 9,000 euros gross. More money than in paid employment, but you also have to do more things. Such as finding clients and projects yourself, the administration, the tax return. I don’t need all that anymore. There is less pressure now.”

Have you negotiated your salary?
“I started applying for jobs in 2020. I noticed that there was a need for professionals, but that employers were also hesitant to hire. I am linked to this company through-via. They asked if I could come by for an interview. I weighed myself what I wanted and came to 3400 gross. That is less than I got as an entrepreneur, but I now also have less afterwork. I wanted to be realistic. In addition, I now also receive a pension and I share in the profits.”

What are your secondary employment conditions?
“First of all, the pension. They pay 60 percent and 40 percent is for my account. I can go to the gym to work out and there is a nice restaurant where you can eat well. The personal contribution is 2.50 euros. I receive a travel allowance and you can follow courses in the direction in which you operate.”

I always have the idea that people only talk about salary when they are not satisfied

Do you know what your colleagues earn?
,,Competitive. Maybe $100 more or less. I always have the idea that people only talk about salary when they are not satisfied.”

Would you like to know?
,,I’m not interested in what someone else earns. I have made good agreements.”

How do you see your future?
,,I’m busy developing beautiful things and hopefully I can implement it. Salary rises automatically. Frankly, I don’t care about it. That’s not my motivation. I’m into electronics and making something sound good. I am more of a professional fanatic.”
