Georgia pledges to meet EU requirements quickly

BERLIN (Reuters) – According to Prime Minister Irakli Garibaschvili, Georgia intends to meet the twelve criteria set by the EU for opening accession talks very quickly.

Garibaschvili said on Wednesday evening after a meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz that he would also offer the opposition a dialogue in order to get them on board for the necessary reforms. The European Union (EU) gave the country the prospect of accession in June, along with Ukraine and Moldova. Garibaschvili did not want to say how many years he sees his country in the EU.

Scholz encourages the Georgian government to implement reforms. He was aware of the great national effort this was. “Germany will support Georgia in this.” The country on the Black Sea has been aspiring to join the EU and NATO for a long time. Russia is providing military support to the breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
