A grand jury is a jury of citizens that has jurisdiction under U.S. criminal law to conduct legal proceedings, investigate possible criminal conduct, and determine whether criminal charges should be brought. State Attorney General Fani Willis has been investigating Trump for a year and can now subpoena witnesses to appear before the grand jury.
Willis’s investigation focuses on a phone call then-President Trump made to Brad Raffensperger, who was responsible in Georgia for certifying the election results. Trump allegedly put pressure on Raffensperger and asked him to “find” 11,780 votes, which would have won Trump the state.
Raffensperger has refused to voluntarily (without a subpoena) cooperate with Willis’s investigation.
The grand jury trial will begin on May 2 and will last 12 months.
