George Michael: “Older” (Review & Stream)

In contrast to David Bowie’s estate administrators, those of George Michael are often accused of having the editions they approve compiled carelessly, without added value. Yeah well – Michael wasn’t known for producing many songs that could be locked away and discovered. Therefore, the reissue of this 1996 album is more accessible through its first-time remaster; the 33 remixes and outtakes are all known. The sensational “Unplugged” concert to promote the album at the time was absurdly already included in the “Listen Without Prejudice” reissue, and the unreleased “Trojan Souls” album, which fell into the “Older” era, will probably be released independently.

The ballads are unmatched

With Bossa nova, George Michael tried to come to terms with the death of his partner Anselmo Feleppa, the death of his idol Antônio Carlos Jobim and a long-standing dispute with his label. His work is perhaps only the second best after “Listen …”, and the experiments with house in particular (“The Strangest Thing”, “Free”) have aged badly. The ballads, however, are unmatched. Michael used symbols of birth and death that Jobim saw in the seasons and composed a mourning version of “Águas de Março” with “To Be Forgiven”.

In “Jesus To A Child” he sang from Feleppa’s deathbed, he courageously completed the live premiere in a not-so-intimate setting at the 1994 MTV Awards in front of the Brandenburg Gate. Two years later he celebrated number one in the UK charts – perhaps the first hit in which a gay man mourns his partner’s death from AIDS. “You Have Been Loved”, his masterpiece, begins as role prose, in which he reveals himself at the end. George Michael, who would never have a child, sings from the perspective of mothers who lose their sons to war or disease: “I’ve no daughters, I’ve no sons/ Guess I’m the only one/ Living my life .”
