Somehow you never quite arrive in life. However, George Ezra, the Hertfordshire singer-songwriter-turned-moving-and-coming-home, seems to have settled down a bit on his third album – and found peace of mind with his alter ego, the ‘Gold Rush Kid’. This enables him to undertake various border hikes here, with his producer Joel Pott actively supporting him.
A very distinctive sense for rousing melodies
As a British superstar, he has remained the nice boy next door, striking the happy medium between fun and seriousness. At the heart of Gold Rush Kid is Green Green Grass, which addresses just that and was written after a street party in St. Lucia that turned out to be a funeral. And Ezra wrote, “You better throw a party on the day that I die…”
As a child of the Spotify generation, our man has an exceptionally keen sense of stirring melodies that many of his colleagues, such as Ed Sheeran and James Morrison, lack in this clarity. He calls his songs “indie dance tunes”. It’s another balancing act, that between romance and fun, that distinguishes “Gold Rush Kid”. It can also be a Eurobeat like on “Dance All Over Me”. Meanwhile, “Anyone For You (Tiger Lily)” exudes an Afropop-inspired Vampire Weekend-like cheerfulness that’s just irresistible.
The opposite of this? On the elegant piano power ballad “Sweetest Human Being”, Ezra sounds like a kind of modern Elton John – with the subtle difference that he can embody more depth with his blues-influenced baritone. That might be it: an Ezra album with an orchestra! Finally, a bit of trivia: if the Gold Rush Kid reminds you of the smashing post-Britpop band Athlete and their hit Wires, you’re absolutely right: producer Joel Pott served as vocalist and guitarist there.
