The Argentine opens the ball in the 36th minute with a great overhead kick, and the defender replies after 4′. Then Gilardino’s team manages without problems in numerical superiority
– Genoa
“And fly fly we go, higher and higher we go” make the Ricchi e Poveri, symbol of singing Liguria, dance. On the pitch Genoa flies and goes higher and higher. Alberto Gilardino’s Grifone soars to 33 points, defeating Udinese (2-0) who, after 25 minutes of attention and some good play, collapses and never re-emerges, ending up with 10 men (red card to Kristensen after 3′ of the second half). Gila is at the center of the cover photo in which Mateo Retegui stands out for the spectacular overhead kick (sixth goal in the championship) that unlocked the challenge, but next to him there is a rediscovered Junior Messias running wildly, a grown Sabelli, a Badelj who he is captain and beating heart, the stainless Frendrup, the creative Gudmundsson (this time it is an assist for Bani) and a defense that Bani (goal scorer tonight) leads with authority. This is Genoa now preparing for the trip to San Siro to annoy Inter. Salvation is a done deal, now we can have fun. Udinese, on the other hand, have to suffer a lot to achieve salvation which is not easy. Sassuolo’s slip saves them, but Gino Pozzo will save Gabriele Cioffi who witnessed the defeat of a team incapable of a reaction after conceding the disadvantage with only Walace saving a drifting boat.
play
—
Gilardino, as expected, confirms Napoli’s 11, Cioffi also relies on the same 11 who started in the drawn match against Cagliari at home. We start and the protagonist immediately becomes referee Forneau who after 19 seconds (a record) warns Giannetti for the first foul on Retegui. A duel in Argentinian style, perhaps exasperated by the idea of physical melee and so the Roman referee intervenes immediately to set things straight. But Giannetti is forced to defend his position. However, Udinese is a wall with Walace insurmountable who doesn’t allow anything to Genoa who has a static and inconclusive ball rotation. Indeed, it is the Bianconeri who force Martinez to use his fists twice. Walace also takes a shot but doesn’t give the right strength. Forneau pardons Frendrup for a foul similar to that of Giannetti. In the 25th minute Lucca, who engages in a physical duel with Bani, hits the crossbar. Udinese certainly did better, but immediately afterwards Genoa began to be more concrete. Vasquez becomes an added attacker and heads the dead ball twice in a few minutes. Okoye performs a miracle, then is saved by the post. He can do nothing in the 36th minute when Retegui invents a champion overhead kick believing in a ball crossed by Martin and on which Giannetti’s diagonal shot was excellent, but the ball remained there. The griffin has Messias who runs like a full-back and Sabelli who acts as a pushing full-back, there is enthusiasm and in the 40th minute Udinese, who had seemed insurmountable, becomes soft: Ehizibue allows a free play to Gudmundsson who puts it in the middle and he finds Bani left alone, undisturbed by the guilty Giannetti. It ends with a yellow for Kristensen caught 4′ from the end to stop the very fast Messias. It’s the middle of the night for the Friulians, it’s pure happiness for the Genoa people who filled the stadium. And it even stopped raining.
second half
—
Cioffi immediately throws in Ebosele to give more liveliness, but the one who is more lively is Junior Messias who goes full speed and gets Kristensen again booked after just 3 minutes. The second yellow means the game ends and Udinese’s game essentially ends too, unable to react and present themselves in a decent way. Cioffi also removes a totally irrelevant Samardzic and Zemura to insert Ferreira and Kamara. With 10 men it’s very tough for the Friulians, while Genoa are obviously looking for the biggest loot. Gila inserts Vogliacco for the excellent Mexican Vasquez. Badelj tries to volley but Okoye is good at putting it in the corner. Frendrup tries, but he kicks out. He instead kicks in Lorenzo Lucca in the 2nd minute who would be unlocked after seven games by anticipating De Winter on a nice cross from Kamara which went in well. but Forneau and also Di Paolo at VAR see a foul by the Moncalieri attacker. In the 32nd minute Gilardino also gives space to his bench and makes three changes: Spence, Malinovsky and Ekuban in, Sabelli, Messias and Retegui out, who spent a lot. Cioffi tries the tip Davis, now recovered for a Thauvin who failed dribbling and numbers. It ends with Nord singing “Un giorno all’impresa” at the top of her lungs. The Marassi night is beautiful.
