Former soccer world champion Gennaro Gattuso takes over the coaching position at traditional French club Olympique Marseille. The club announced this on Wednesday.
The 45-year-old, who won the World Cup with Italy in Germany in 2006, is already on the bench for the away game against Monaco on Saturday.
“I am very happy and proud to be joining Olympique Marseille,” Gattuso is quoted on the club’s website: “I’m looking forward to getting to work with my new group and mastering the challenges that lie ahead wait.”
Gattuso was coach of FC Valencia until the end of January; he had previously coached SSC Napoli and AC Milan, among others. The previous OM coach Marcelino was fired last week. Marseille is in eighth place in the French Ligue 1 after six games.
