‘By determining what we stand for now, we will maintain control in the future.’ On January 18, State Secretary for Digitalization Alexandra van Huffelen presented during the Generative AI Event in The Hague the government-wide vision on generative AI. As one of the first EU member states, the Netherlands has a vision on this technology.

The impact of AI can be significant, the State Secretary stated at the opening of the event. For example, it could affect around 60 percent of jobs in the Netherlands. Abuse of generative AI could also pose a threat to democracy and the rule of law, and could give too much power to a few large American companies.

Safe and fair

That is why the government wants to ‘stay on the ball’ with generative AI and keep a grip on this new system technology. According to the vision, generative AI must be developed and applied in a safe and fair manner, with a proportional distribution of the burdens and benefits. “Through good cooperation between government, market and society, we can maintain control over this, so that public values are not compromised.” If it is up to the State Secretary, the next cabinet will build on these plans.

Sessions

Research coordinator Linda Kool from the Rathenau Institute presented it to the State Secretary at the event research report ‘Generative AI’, which formed an important input for the government-wide vision. At the event, the vision was examined from different angles in a panel discussion, but also with concrete examples of AI in practice. In breakout sessions, participants could delve deeper into topics such as the AI Regulation, it own language model GTP NL and other lines of action from the vision.

Open approach

Now that the government-wide vision has been published, our work does not stop. With the generative AI core team, we now focus mainly on the implementation of the vision by initiating various lines of action from the vision. We will continue with the open approach and will continue to report monthly on the progress of these actions. We will discuss this with sectors along the axis of these actions and continue to monitor developments. We will also continue to organize sessions to keep in touch with residents, such as at libraries and other platforms.
