Sara is an activist of Fridays for Future. Federico, waiting for a non-underpaid job, is a rider and lives with his father. After graduating from Catholic school, Giorgio returned to Taranto to assist his mother who was ill with cancer. They are the three protagonists of the first episode of More than anyone else – Generation Zone series produced by Rai Documentari which leaves the floor to young people to tell their stories, with dreams, hopes, awareness. On air RaiPlay from September 26th.
«The idea came from Silvia Barbieri, Vittorio Parpaglioni Barbieri’s mother: they are both, together with me, authors of the program», says director Flavia Montini. «Silvia wanted to understand and support the generation of her twenty-five-year-old son. Then they involved me, who is 40 years old, has 2 children and is therefore of an intermediate age. Yet I feel very distant from Generation Z. Just think about it at school I did research in the children’s encyclopediaI was looking for information. Instead, they have too much information and must learn to select and hierarchize it.”
In More than anyone else – Generation Z, we talk about many topics close to children; environmentalism, first of all, which is very close to their hearts, but also the search for a job that is not all-encompassing but allows you to maintain time for yourself and your interests (exemplary is the comparison between Federico and his father, now retired, who had put work at the center of life). Of a non-traditional teachingcapable of exciting the students, speaks Verdiana, an enthusiastic young teacher in a high school, who asks the children to use their cell phones to find words about March 8th, and the reason for this holiday.
Generation Z respects diversity
We also talk about sexuality with Elena, an LGBTQ+ activist who was a victim of bullying as a young girl, and with Enea, who is starting a gender transition journey. Respect for rights and diversity is an established fact, although not all adults understand this. One episode is dedicated to psychological distress, with the story of some girls who have overcome periods of depression and eating disorders.
«We decided to give the kids the floor, simply listening. Something that we adults do little” continues Flavia Montini. «This is a generation that, contrary to what is often written, has a great sense of responsibility, he is in the real world and deals with it. And the virtual world, in which they are immersed, allows them to share real experiences, to ward off loneliness. If I hear a peer talk about bulimia, and clear it, I feel better, I understand that I am not alone. At the same time they recognize the limits of this system, the pressures they experience to try to adhere to an unattainable model».
Digital passes through their lives, from school to work: Federica and Giulio have turned their passion for video games into a profession and now dedicate themselves to it, in their rooms, always connected with their followers. «Sociability changes: at home I am alone but connected to the whole world», adds the director. “And I also try to change it.”
