The farmers are protesting vigorously, but tomorrow GPs from all over the country will also be heard at the Malieveld in The Hague. Vanessa Huijbens from Krommenie will certainly be among them. She thinks that as a GP she now has too many tasks on her plate. “My profession deserves to fight for and my patients deserve it too.”
Taking on more tasks as a general practitioner, a severe corona crisis and then also the debilitating uncertainty whether she will have a roof over her practice in the future. “I’m a bit tired”, she smiles before the interview with NH Nieuws starts.
She talks about the increased range of tasks that she and her fellow GPs have to deal with. “For a long time it has been thought: the GP can do it and also cheaply. That has been going on for a few years. We persisted for a while, took over a lot of work from hospitals and psychiatry. In recent years we have been running always on our toes, now the limit has been reached.”
Housing
“Many general practitioners are now encountering housing problems. The largest part is short of space,” says Huijbens. She herself knows all too well what that is like. In November 2020, NH Nieuws already reported on its search for new premises for its practice.

“This building is temporary, I knew that in advance,” says the doctor. “So after the takeover of this practice, I started looking for space in Krommenie. And that turned out to be an extremely complicated task. There is very little to be found here and at the same time the date on which this building will be demolished (that is in November, ed. .) getting closer.” She has now found something, but it is still exciting whether the financing will be completed.
She continues: “This is a very important reason for me to go to the Malieveld tomorrow. My profession deserves to fight for and my patients deserve it too. Older people in particular are often very dependent on the knowledge that there is a good doctor is around the corner where you can easily go. It is difficult for them to notice that it may no longer be there in the future. A lot of people are very concerned about that.”
