The State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia expects the inclusion of manager Michael Mronz in the International Olympic Committee to increase the chances of a German Olympic bid.
“As a member of the IOC, Michael Mronz could help promote the continuous dialogue between the DOSB and the IOC that is necessary for an application,” said Christoph Niessen, Chairman of the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation is currently examining whether there should be a new attempt to bring summer or winter games to the country. The 56-year-old Mronz has been proposed by the IOC Executive Committee as an “independent individual” for election at the General Assembly in Mumbai, India, which begins on Sunday.
The election is considered a formality
In addition to President Thomas Bach and the former fencer Britta Heidemann, the Cologne native would be the third German in the IOC.
Mronz is not only independent, but also “successful and his expertise with regard to international sporting events is undisputed,” said Niessen. “It is obvious that this could help German sport, perhaps even because it is currently not tied to one of the German sports associations,” he said about the managing director of Aachen Reitturnier GmbH. It organizes the CHIO in Aachen, the largest equestrian tournament in the world.
