The second Sumatran tiger was euthanized in just under two weeks in the Berlin zoo.

The four-year-old tomcat Willi was found to have significantly worsened the right knee joint during an examination, the zoo announced yesterday.

The tiger was born in 2018 with three siblings. But all quadruplets had a genetic knee misalignment and the associated cartilage damage. As a result, all tigers buckled their hind legs as they ran.

It was not until July 12 that Willis’s sister Kiara had to be put to sleep, she was also suffering from severe pain.

The state of health of the two quadruplets who are still alive, Oskar and Seri, who are also being looked after by the veterinarian, is said to be unchanged.
