In a new interview, the director talked about his likely last film.
Quentin Tarantino revealed details about his new film The Movie Critic in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival. However, the protagonist does not write reviews for a well-known film magazine, but publishes his texts in a porn magazine. “The Movie Critic” is set in 1977 and, according to Tarantino, is based on a man who is said to have actually lived. The mysterious critic is said to have never gained real notoriety.
New insights into “The Movie Critic”
One of the first jobs the 60-year-old filmmaker had was filling a vending machine with porn magazines. That was the first time he had read about the reviewer. “He wrote about mainstream films and was only second-choice critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was bloody cynical. His reviews were a mix of early Howard Stern and Travis Bickle [Robert DeNiros Figur in „Taxi Driver“] as a film critic,” Tarantino said in an interview. It was “very, very funny,” he added. “He was very mean. He cursed. He used racial slurs. But his stuff was really funny. He was bloody mean.”
The Oscar winner did research on the life of the film critic. The latter had already died in his late 30s as a result of alcoholism. Accordingly, he will cast his main role with an actor who is in this age group. Not the easiest task for Tarantino since his usual actors, such as Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio, are significantly older. “I already have someone in mind who I can imagine would do really well,” he said. But he is not yet sure whether he should give this person the role, he said to “Deadline”.
Quentin Tarantino is a guest at this year’s Cannes Festival to present the audience with a film that had a great impact on his youth: “Rolling Thunder” (1977). Tarantino dedicated a chapter in his book Cinema Speculation to the revenge thriller directed by John Flynn. He has long campaigned to give the film the respect it deserves. He is therefore particularly proud of having brought the film to Cannes, where it will be broadcast in a 35mm version.
Quentin Tarantino wants to step down as a filmmaker
Quentin Tarantino said a long time agothat he wanted to retire as a filmmaker at the age of 60. So far he has successfully filmed nine of his stories and is now apparently planning his last work. In 2012 he told Playboy: “I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually the worst movies in their filmography are the last four at the end. I’m all about my filmography and one bad film ruins three good ones. I don’t want to have this bad, outdated comedy in my filmography, the film that makes people go, ‘Oh man, he lives 20 years in the past.’ It’s not nice when directors go out of style.” That doesn’t mean he wants to retire from showbiz entirely, though. For example, he could still imagine taking part in theater productions.
